Summon: How did the band get started?
Greg: Well, the band was started by our guitarist, Theo. He had that songs and ideas dating back to 2005 and eventually found Jim to play the drums. I’m not sure when during this period the original vocalist, Liakos, fits in, but I can tell you that I joined shortly after Theo and Jim recorded the tracks on our promo (2-3 August, 2008). Theo just called me up one day and asked if I would be interested in doing vocals for Birth of Depravity, I of course was. He sent me the tracks, which blew me away, and that’s that.

Summon: What kind of music do you play?
Greg: Straight up brutal death metal, man. Enough said.

Summon: How has the band response been?
Greg: The response has been great, nothing but positive reviews and comments from both sides of the spectrum, from friends to total strangers.

Summon: Where did the band name come from?
Greg: The band name is Theo’s conception.

Summon: Introduce the band members
Greg: Well, Theo’s our guitarist and bassist on recordings, Jim is our drummer and I’m Greg, on vocals.

Summon: Who writes the music? Lyrics?
Greg: Theo writes all the music while Jim ties it all together on the drum set . Lyrics are written by Theo and me, mostly together, some on my own.

Summon: And where do the lyric ideas come from?
Greg: From general disdain for things and situations that are prevalent around us to various thoughts on society. There are definitely some personal feelings and thoughts in the lyrics, as well as one song which is about something totally different, namely about a super-massive black hole devouring our corner of the universe. I think it can be said that we just write about our interests and what’s on our mind while trying to take some inspiration as to direction of the lyrics from the actual music itself.

Summon: What is your view in Satanism and Occultism?
Greg: Personally, I couldn’t care less. But, to each, his own I guess.

Summon: How many albums/CD’s have you released?
Greg: As of this the moment of this interview, just the promo, but we are in the finals stages of our first full length album, Coming of the Ineffable.

Summon: Tell me about some the songs on the latest CD?
Greg: Our debut is still unreleased, but I can tell you that the tracks on it are more brutal than the promo. I also think as songs they show more maturity than the promo. We’ve got ten tracks, nine new and one re-recorded from the promo (Dehumanization by Hellfire) that we’re very pleased with and anxious to share with everybody.

Summon: Do you have any side projects?
Greg: No, not really. I did vocals for a band, Comatose, prior to Birth of Depravity as well as a very brief period with Jim in another band, Remnants of Flesh, as live members. I’ve also done some stuff with Devastation of Life, and I think Jim might have played drums for some other bands during the same period of Birth of Depravity, but I’m not sure. Basically Birth of Depravity comes first and foremost.

Summon: Who are some of your musical influences?
Greg: Well, we obviously listen to a lot of death metal and brutal death metal. Not to mention grindcore and just metal in general. But we listen to all kinds of music, even if we only draw inspiration for Birth of Depravity from the same and/or similar genres.

Summon: Which current bands?
Greg: Too fucking many to name…

Summon: What is the band like when you play live?
Greg: We’ve only played live once, but I can tell you it was a blast. We’re friends that happen to be in a band together, and we like to have a good time, so that’s what we do.

Summon: What was the best band you played with?
Greg: Ummm….

Summon: Have you guys ever played in another country?
Greg: No, unfortunately not. But we would definitely love to sometime.

Summon: How big of crowd shows up at shows usually?
Greg: Haha…during our one show, I really don’t know.

Summon: How is the crowd response when you play?
Greg: Once again, during our one show, it was great.

Summon: What is your opinion on the conflict of Black Metal Vs Death Metal?
Greg: I like both styles myself, even if I do prefer the latter, so personally I fail to see the conflict.

Summon: What do you think of the US Black/Death Metal scene?
Greg: Strong.

Summon: What do you think of the Overseas scenes?
Greg: Strong, just like the US scene, although I’ve always felt there’s a totally different vibe to at least what’s coming out of the European scene in comparison to the US counterpart. Not to say it’s better or worse, just different.

Summon: What are some of new favorite Black/Death Metal bands?
Greg: “New”? I’m drawing a total blank here. I love a lot of classic bands of these genres, some still playing and some not, but once again, way too many to start naming.

Summon: When do you guys plan on writing any new material?
Greg: Theo is pretty much always coming up with new material. Even now, nearing the release of our debut he’s already working on a couple of new tracks.

Summon: What does the future hold for the band??
Greg: Good question. For starters the release of our debut, from there on, new material and hopefully some live shows eventually.

Recording sessions for "The Coming of the Ineffable" album have finished. The process of mixing and mastering is at its end. The band recorded their debut album at "Block 33" studio in Thessaloniki, Greece with producer and sound engineer their good friend Thanasis Papaefthimiou (Extreme Violence / Enter the dragon Home Studios).

The community of brutal death metal is growing every day. It intends to obtain more acceptability from wider music listeners. Thanks to many factors that commercialized this sub-genre, brutal death metal is starting to be a big trend and new comers participate in the scene. In the brutal death history, when it first appeared during late 1990s, in general holland brutal league is highly intrigued, their styles and sounds are closely similar to American brutal death metal. Although, few bands were created from that windmill-signature country, it aroused music fellows in Europe to create and to establish their own bands and communities. But it takes a little long time for Greece to unleash their authentic brutality. With my limited information, Extreme Violence is the first band from Greece that appeared in my knowledge. Subsequently, many bands flooded from this country and similar geographic such as Italy. ‘Birth of Depravity’ is created by the effect of the flourishing brutal death metal in Greece. It was not until 2005, the band was formed by Theo, the guitarist and bassist, with cooperation of Liakos, the current singer of ‘The Almighty Fisherman’. However, this bond is transient, Liakos left the band, Theo embodied the line-up by Jim and Greg, drum and vocals, respectively. After line-up was ready, they released this promo EP in 2008, containing only two songs. ‘Dehumanization by Hellfire’ and ‘Consumed Fucking Humanity’ are composed in this release. It represents ‘Birth of Depravity’ style of brutal death metal, which is similar to other blasting brutality. It is smooth blasting with an even flow of music. The song structure is not much complicated as they are intended to stick in a direct blasting pattern. They maintain good tempo and speed for this recording. Hence, it made this release a valuable and good starting point for their career. The big drawback is only two songs are not enough for this kind of music. The sound quality is rather excellent. It matches with bands style and the sound is compressed and pressured as brutal. This accomplished was done by assisting of Thanasis Papaefthimiou, whose famous is from Extreme Violence, under his home studio, Enter the Dragon. From this promo, it is worth to hear their first full-length album. And i'am sure a label will catch this band when they release a full length.

1. Welcome Theo, to start i just wanted to congratulate you on convincing me totallt that Greek death metal still has ball. Promo 2008 confirmed this for me and i can honestly say i only have positive things to say.
Hello Chris!!I'd like to thank you for the interview and for your good words too!!Well yeah i agree that Greek death metal has balls, besides this has been proven from some great bands.

2. BIRTH OF DEPRAVITY for me is a band that came from nowhere, that is its a new band which we havent heard any thing prior to this day. Tell us a bit about the band and its roots.
Well actually we're are a band which consists from some simple guys who like to play that kind of music and we have done some little promotion from our myspace page..actually to whom we are known, we owe that to the internet. Our roots are our listenings and all death metal pioneers who left their mark in death metal.

3. Promo 2008 in my opinion and hopefully after others are infected is that the material is full of power, which for such young guys is suprising to hear. Have you fellas worked on this for a long time or does it come naturally?
Power, strength, energy and brutallity are the main elements of Birth of Depravity's music.Besides death metal and brutal death metal is a music which expresses those elements to their highest.The promo tracks are a little bit old actually, new tracks are much more extreme and technical in some kind of way. We worked seriously on the promo tracks for at about 3-4 months i think and going in the studio to play once a week. Unfortunately for several reasons we dont have the time to play for example 3 times a week, which would be the best for us.

4. Promo 2008 isnt the longest of recordings but apart from that everything is first class, cd-r, good sound engineering and a nice c.d cover. Do you think such advanced band promotion will bring the band success?
haha i never saw it that way, the recording took us 8 hours, the cover is just a simple cover in photoshop and the production is how it had to be for a promo for that style of death metal. I think everything is simple in that release and because we feel happy with the whole thing there's no reason for making it better, it's just a promo release.

5. What comes first the music or the lyrics when you guys write a song?
First comes the music and then the lyrics. The title depends on how the feeling of the song is and what we want to talk about, lastly comes the lyrics.

6. You recorded in STUDIO LIVE, how was that experience?
It was a great experience and much important for us, it was the first time where i and Jim went to a studio to record something and we both feel stronger after that. A kind of stressed sense left from us and a sense of fullfilment and joy filled us all. The vocals as you saw in the promo were recorded by Greg at his home, and this is because we live in a different town.

7. After listening to the promo it kind of reminded me of SEVER TORTURE from Holland. IS the band influenced by any specific bands out there?
Of course we are influenced, there are so many great bands in death metal over all these years of it's existence, underground acts or not who have inspired us.Our influenses are not only music, it might be a thought or an image or an influence from a kind of music which has nothing to do with metal. I mean that our purpose is not that we want to play like deicide, origin, deranged, morbid angel or cannibal corpse...besides that those bands have influenced us, we play on how it comes naturally from us.

8. Would you call yourself a aperfectionist? Do you even after the final recordingwish you could go back and change things?
No we dont call our selves perfectionists. We just want to respect that thing which is called death metal and play something which has sense and will make us happy. No we dont want to change something on these recordings, we are satisfied from the whole thing and except that, the promo tracks will be re-recorded when we'll enter the studio for recording our debut cd..so this means that some parts will have some small changes on how we play them.

9. Who created the album cover and what are your thoughts about it?
I created the cd cover, it's our myspace background pic with the logo and i searched over the web to find some skulls and stick them on the cover and done some other changes using photoshop. It's just a simple cover.

10. Any new material on the way?
Yes!!Cant wait for the right time when we enter the studio to record our debut!! Maybe at the end of this year, this might have happen...so let's see....

11. Whats been playing on your stereo recently? Do you only listen to death metal?
In my stereo there were some disavowed stuff, merlin, deicide, atrocious abnormality, blasphemer and some guitar tracks. We dont listen only to death metal, we hear every kind of metal and every thing which sounds good to us, death metal is our biggest love by the way.

12. Any Greek bands out there that that we wouldnt necessaily know about but you think we should look out for?
I think that you should check out extreme violence, comatose, remnants of flesh, vulnus, terrordrome, mass infection and dead congregation.

The first time i heard this record i must admit it brought me a lot of joy. Top shelf brutal death metal is definitely what BIRTH OF DEPRAVITY are and it can be said that they do it perfectly. Everybody who listens to the record is bound to feel a little bit of spontaneous emotion not from the easy melody but from the fact that the band destroy from start to finish. Reminences of SEVERE TORTURE are totally there, the vocals rip and overall the sound is very good for representing themselves in such a short period of time. I know that their are lots of people out there who would argue that there is dozens of bands with the same sound but for me these boys from Greece hit the spot and i cant wait for the next instalment. I urgue everyone out there to have a listen to PROMO 2008 especially if your a fan of uncompromising brutal death.
